Local Walks & Wildlife

Circular walk: The public footpath starts by the winery and. runs alongside our garden.  It goes through a wood and several fields besides the river and the remains of the mill leat, then through a small abandoned quarry, over Tucking Mill bridge and up to the popular pub, The Waie Inn.  The route continues through the old village of Zeal Monachorum and you can return through the vineyard by taking another signposted public footpath across the fields.  There are glorious views of the river valley from the path above the vineyard in all seasons.

The spring flowers in Devon are particularly lovely and primroses, bluebells and wild orchids abound on this walk.

The area teems with the usual garden birds.  Greater spotted woodpeckers and nuthatches are frequent visitors to the garden, whilst ravens, buzzards, sparrow hawks, and kingfishers can be seen in the surrounding area.  Less common visitors, such as a night heron and a hoopoe have been spotted in nearby fields.

The garden, fields and vineyard are a haven for butterflies, including red admirals, commas, brimstones, common blue, tortoiseshell, fritillaries etc.
